Building a Career in Industry with Dr. Christian Andersen

By Pamela Monahan, PhD, CRS Director of Grad and Postdoc Affairs, January 8, 2026

A growing career consideration for many trainees today is the transition into industry science. As the job market evolves and perspectives on career paths shift among trainees entering graduate studies, CRS hosted a Career Catalyst event focused on exploring careers in the industry sector. Christian Andersen headshot

Dr. Christian Andersen, PhD, Senior Scientist in the Therapeutics Group at Schrödinger, joined the CRS community virtually to present “From Bench to Boardroom: The Many Roles of Industry Science.” His talk offered attendees valuable insight into the wide range of scientific roles that support biomedical innovation and project development within industry settings. Drawing from his own professional journey, Dr. Andersen shared lessons learned along the way and illustrated how his scientific training helped open doors to unexpected career opportunities.

The discussion on evolving one’s scientific identity was particularly impactful, highlighting the many skill sets developed during graduate training that readily translate to a diverse array of industry and non-academic careers. Using his background as a toxicologist as an example, Dr. Andersen demonstrated how a single educational foundation can apply to multiple roles across different companies and sectors.

In addition to career pathways, Dr. Andersen addressed practical aspects of entering the industry job market. From navigating job searches and understanding salary ranges to recognizing how industry hiring trends expand and contract over time, he provided a comprehensive overview of what trainees can expect. He also shared actionable strategies and resources, offering attendees a clear framework for approaching their own career transitions.

Overall, the event equipped trainees with both perspective and practical tools, reinforcing that a career in industry science is not a departure from scientific identity, but an opportunity to apply it in impactful and versatile ways.
