Dr. Francesca Duncan, Executive Director of the Center for Reproductive Science, was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship titled “Keeping Reproductive Science and Medicine Visible, Viable and Valuable through Education across the Globe”. Dr. Duncan will be traveling to Spain where she will teach and perform research at the University of Murcia.
The Fulbright Program was founded in 1946 by Senator J. William Fulbright with the aim of increasing mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Presently, the Fulbright Program is the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program and helps fund the promotion of international goodwill through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science.
As the Executive Director for the Center for Reproductive Science, Dr. Duncan was intrinsic to the creation and implementation of the Masters in Reproductive Science and Medicine (MS-RSM) program at Northwestern University that launched in 2016. As the first of its kind in the United States, the MS-RSM program focuses on providing fundamental reproductive science training with an emphasis on applications to human health.
During her tenure as a Fulbright scholar, Dr. Duncan will be a faculty member in the Masters in Biology and Technology of Reproduction in Mammals program at the University of Murcia where she will teach didactic lectures and accompanying laboratories and perform basic research. This program was one of the first in the world to focus on formal reproductive science education at the science level. Dr. Duncan’s priority will be to increase international collaboration, thereby expanding the repertoire of reproductive science training within the United States.
The Fulbright Program is highly competitive, and we are thrilled that Dr. Duncan will be representing Northwestern and the topic of Reproductive Science. As Dr. Duncan states, “[M]y personal goal is to build a common global language in reproductive science education with the hope of establishing international crosstalk and student exchange between these programs in future years.” The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is very proud of Dr. Duncan and this incredible achievement!
