This new award is endowed by Dr. Edgar Makowski, a prominent physician who practiced at the University of Colorado and whose named Endowed chair is now held by Dr. Kumar. In the spirit of Dr. Makowski’s dedication to women’s health, Dr. Kumar will invest $500 annually to honor the highest achieving MS-RSM student. Dr. Kumar will travel to Northwestern each year to deliver a lecture and personally bestow this award. A student in the inaugural MS-RSM class will be the first recipient of this prestigious award in March 2018.
“We are honored that Dr. Kumar has so generously chosen to support the MS-RSM program. This investment in reproductive science education is visionary and will ensure that our field continues to train scientists and clinicians ready for the fast paced environment of learning, exploring and treating issues associated with reproductive health,” said Dr. Teresa Woodruff, CRS Director.
Dr. Kumar is a luminary in the field of reproductive endocrinology and has made unprecedented discoveries on pituitary gonadotropins using sophisticated transgenic mouse models. His high impact research is paving the way for new understanding of human fertility and clinical treatments for infertility. Moreover, Dr. Kumar is passionate about training the next generation of reproductive scientists and has been a mentor for countless trainees in his previous role as Director for the Center for Reproductive Science at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Kumar is also a member of the Northwestern University’s CRS external advisory board.
Dr. Kumar specifically decided to support the MS-RSM program because “we all share common goals to train and teach young scientists in reproductive science and medicine. MS-RSM is a unique program in the country with a specific goal to train young scientists in reproductive science”. explained Dr. Kumar. Dr. Kumar also chose MS-RSM because of his close academic association with Dr. Woodruff for many years and more recently with Dr. Duncan.
“Dr. Kumar’s decision to support the MS-RSM through this award exemplifies his dedication to keep the field of reproductive science and medicine strong. The MS-RSM students are fortunate that their training will be touched by such a leader” said Dr. Francesca Duncan, CRS Executive Director.
